The UNSW Bookshop was Highly Commended in the Retail category at the Interior Design Excellence Awards (IDEA).
The IDEAs are Australia’s largest independent design awards program. Launched by Inside Magazine in 2003 the highly sought-after awards celebrate outstanding work by interior designers and architects.
The transformation of the existing bookshop involved a redesign of the whole retail experience realised in close collaboration with the Estate Management team at UNSW and SJB Architects.
While the digital revolution has changed the way people read and interact, the UNSW Bookshop has retained a collection of written works while also now offering a café and communal space for staff and students to gather.
The venue now features the Atomic Press café and a large space to hold events.
The Bookshop run by UNSW Press Ltd is already a multi-award winner of the Award for Campus Bookseller of the Year (2012, 2014, 2016 and 2017) and has been transformed in line with the UNSW 2025 Strategy.
The Strategy’s approach to social engagement aims to attract students, staff and neighbours and facilitate engagement opportunities for UNSW and the broader community as well as foster creativity and public engagement within a vibrant university cultural space.
This world-class project has created a central hub in the middle of the campus for students and staff to access high quality educational books and resources, branded merchandise, book and gift service as well as space for intellectual leadership and collaboration.
The UNSW Bookshop has been widely recognised for its excellence collecting numerous industry awards.
